Episode 2: Wunderkammer, reactivate deserted spaces
Natacha Isoz and Romain Dubuis
Nomadic space, founded in Lausanne in 2014
Born in Lausanne from the meeting of two architects, the collective Wunderkammer organizes exhibitions in buildings that are going to be destroyed or transformed. By activating deserted spaces for a time, offering them new stories, Wunderkammer seeks to reactivate the political, social and cultural interaction between the site and the social fabric it inhabits. They question the metamorphosis of urban space and the city at the scale of its inhabitants. With projects that are always different in size—from an exhibition in an old bourgeois villa to a sound program in a Louis XV-style interior—Wunderkammer questions the relationship that art has with the space in which it is exhibited, in which it is perceived. In situ, each work, each performance, each situation is an opportunity for the artist to propose a personal reading of the place, to reveal its history and architecture. At the same time, the singularity of the available spaces participates in the production of equally particular works. For Wunderkammer it is the opportunity to propose something that goes against a certain kind of homogenization of the contemporary artistic panorama.
