The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève introduces the second chapter of its Swiss Panorama, a 5th floor program presenting a selection of digital works recently produced by Swiss artists, or artists living in Switzerland, which aims to draw a panorama of the territories and forms emerging from the local art scene. This program will be curated by Lhaga Namlha Koondhor.

The practice of interdisciplinary curator and artist, Lhaga Namlha Koondhor spans across the fields of curatorial work, creative direction, and music programming. Her projects, always relating to lyrical themes (parasitism, breeding, pop and counterculture), articulate themselves much like theory-fiction and oral mythology. They are thoroughly informed by a collaborative approach, never possessing a dominant authorial voice, but rather articulating themselves by including other voices and being marked by a shared understanding.

Lhaga Namlha Koondhor, also known as Asian Eyez, born in Switzerland, lives and works between Zürich and Shanghai. Koondhor is a curator and cultural provocateur that spent her career breaking boundaries and establishing inclusive strategies. By finding innovative ways to bring together her network and community, she creates artistic interventions that look beyond existing systems and deepen the notion of communality.

Diamonds
2019

Diamond is a collaboration between rapper Yao Bobby, noise artist Simon Grab and filmmakers Tillo Spreng and Tobias Kubli. The work merges artistic forms to articulate a critical stance towards global power structures. Using free digital media tools, the work reveals their non-neutrality and explores their specific visual representation system. Through a process of visual data mining, disturbing artefacts are brought to light from binary resource tunnels.

Tobias Kubli (b.1992) was born in Affoltern am Albis in Switzerland. As of 2011, he has been entirely dedicated to moving image. He initially learned his craft as a filmmaker through various jobs as a lighting designer and cameraman. Since 2013, he has been working as a freelance filmmaker and cameraman in Switzerland and abroad. His first feature film as cameraman, TANQUILLO, was released in 2018.

Tillo Spreng (b.1984) graduated from ZHdK in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in the specialization of audiovisual media. Since 2012, he has been directing music videos, short films, commercials and TV productions as a director and writer. In 2022, he completed his Master of Arts in Transdisciplinarity at ZHdK, through which he studied representation, collaborative processes, and authorship in relation to his practice in depth.

Jan Vorisek
Palinopsia
2020

Palinopsia, as its title suggests, opens on a repeating 30 second clip of the Hong Kong skyline viewed through a subway window, accompanied by an escalating electronic score composed by the filmmaker. It is just after sunset, the scenes include buildings, LED billboards, arcades of luxury stores, subways, cars, commuters and much more, captured through a floating camera, sometimes distorted with effects.

This video is a direct extensions of Vorisek’s sculptural and sonic practices. The artist is particularly interested in passageways and labyrinths, not just as physical spaces, but also for their ability to facilitate psychic experiences of transit and liminality, such as the alienated mind space of watching landscapes pass one by from a vehicle window, wandering through homogeneous shopping galleries, or making sense of the antiseptic ‘nowheres’ of industrial facilities. The artist’s use of mazes is an extension of his interest in the fragile line between a spectator’s feelings of curiosity, frustration, and panic.

Jan Vorisek (b.1987) lives and works in Zürich and Berlin. In 2021, he released a 7-inch record titled Erratic Shine with the label Czarna Góra. Together with Mathis Altmann and Lhaga Koondhor, he organizes a series of club nights called HOUSE OF MIXED EMOTIONS or H.O.M.E for short. Recent international exhibitions include Arcadia Missa, UK; Zaza’ Milano, IT; High Art Arles, FR; Museion Bolzano, IT; Swiss Institute, New York, US; Kunstmuseum Bonn, DE; Platin B E++, Vienna, AU; Kunsthaus Glarus, CH; Festspielehaus Hellerau, ICA Milano, IT; Dresden, DE; LUMA Foundation, Zürich, CH; Auto Italia London, UK; Observation Society, Guangzhou, CN; Kunsthalle Basel, CH; Gallerie Bernhard Zürich, CH; PLATO, Ostrava, CZ; Kunsthalle St. Gallen, CH; TG, Nottingham, UK; Space Arland, Lausanne, CH; Kunstverein Braunschweig, DE; Hard Hat, Geneva, CH; New Jerseyy Basel, CH.

Hannah Weinberger
Hommage
2022

This film is an homage to Maja Naef, a dedicated art historian and media scholar known for her subtlety and passion. Her interests and expertise ranged from the history of experimental cinema and video art to media historiographies and aesthetics, as well as gender and queerness in film. For many artists, students and friends, she was an intellectual and human role model. They all carry her in their hearts.

The video recordings were made over several year in various places, primarily during travels, and were sourced from the artist’s personal archive. The soundtrack features an excerpt from Weinberger’s score for the film Oceano de Amor by Alexa Karolinski and Ingo Niermann.

Hannah Weinberger (b.1988) is a Swiss artist who lives and works in Basel and holds a master’s degree in visual arts from the University of Fine Arts in Zurich. She has presented solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Braunschweig; the Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; the Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin; Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg; Kunsthaus Bregenz; MIT List Center for Visual Arts, Cambridge, MA; FriArt, Fribourg; the Swiss Institute, New York; and the Kunsthalle Basel, among others.
