Worst Summer Haiku is a video conceived as a behind the scenes portrayal of an unrealized movie, the title of which would have been Life and Work of Chiara Fumai (1978 – 2017). Following and yet missing its star, the video was filmed by the feminist Italian artist’s husband between Seoul, Milan, New York and Bari during the summer of 2017. Fumai only appears in two brief moments. In the first one, she is in a garden from a future that will never be. After a long, well-lived life, she is ready to share her wisdom: “Youth is overrated; time does not exist”. In the second one, she is at work in her studio in Bruxelles, filmed by her mother, back in 2014.
Worst Summer Haiku anticipates the first retrospective of the work of Chiara Fumai, which will open in November at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève. The show will then tour at the Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Prato, La Casa Encendida in Madrid and La Loge in Bruxelles.
