The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève is proud to present Jonas Mekas. Birth of the Internet Nation, a video made on the occasion of one of the artist’s legendary solo exhibitions. Titled The Internet Saga and curated by Francesco Urbano Ragazzi, the show took place in May 2015 in Venice, within the walls of a sixteenth century palazzo converted into a fast-food restaurant.
So far unreleased images capture Jonas Mekas while intimately talking with his audience. In front of his masterpiece Birth of a Nation, a movie-quartet which collects 160 portraits of independent filmmakers, the artist meditates on the future of moving images. The international nation of independent film-makers pioneered by Mekas and his diary films pushed him to pursue a perpetual Avant-Garde and reach the borders of a new Nation. It is the Internet Nation “where anybody can make movies, where each of us has one or two cameras in their pockets.”
